Import restrictions

An import permit is required for many goods. Before posting any item, senders should confirm that the addressee has any necessary permit. Senders should determine import restrictions from the country's authorities before posting:

  • antiques
  • arms and ammunition
  • cereals
  • clothing and textiles
  • coffee, tea, maté and spices
  • currencies
  • foodstuffs
  • jewelry
  • pharmaceuticals
  • plants

Personal gifts containing personal items in acceptable quantities are admitted. Gift items that exceed acceptable quantities are treated as commercial goods that require an import permit. All commercial goods attract duty.

Items containing credit cards must be sent by Registered Mail or Xpresspost.

Prohibited Items

In addition to items considered non-mailable matter by the Canada Post Corporation Act & Regulations (refer to the Canada Postal Guide under “Non-mailable Matter”), the following are prohibited:

  • chemicals
  • live animals and animal products
  • narcotics
  • rubber
  • soil
  • tobacco

Senders should indicate the addressee's telephone number and, when available, fax and mobile numbers in the address field on postal parcels and on the Customs Declaration.
