Operations update: Making good progress as we accept commercial volumes

December 20, 2024

With new commercial volumes now being accepted – and our operations quickly ramping up – we want to update customers on the status of our network and what to expect in the days ahead. We appreciate your patience throughout this process. We’re making good progress and are committed to delivering for customers as we work to return to full service levels.

Update on the status of our network

We’ve processed all the parcels held in our system during the strike and they’re now flowing through our network. We’ve also worked to clear existing mail, parcels and returns from post offices and retail outlets so that they have more capacity to accept new items.

And now that we have resumed commercial inductions and scheduled pickups, we’re accepting new volumes into the network and are doing our best to process it safely and as quickly as possible.

Delays will continue early into the new year

A significant portion of the items that were held in our network during the strike will be delivered before Christmas. To enable this, we’ll be delivering this weekend in select cities.

Customers should continue to expect delivery delays through the remainder of 2024 and into early January 2025 for domestic packages. With a large, integrated network of processing plants, depots and post offices nationally, returning to full service levels and normal delivery standards will take longer in some parts of the country. While employees are making a best effort to stabilize delivery operations for rural and remote areas, delays should be expected into early 2025.

For packages being transported between urban centres – which is where our processing and distribution facilities are located – customers should expect delivery delays of two to three days. For packages being transported over longer distances, customers should expect delivery delays of up to 10 days.

We expect to be able to return to full service levels and normal delivery standards in early January.

What this means for customers

With our operations ramping up, here’s where things stand and what it means for customers:

Parcels and mail

  • As of December 19, we started accepting mail and parcels at our plants, depots and commercial deposit centres (CDCs).
  • Scheduled pickups also resumed on December 19. On-demand pickups will resume on Monday, December 23.
  • All new parcels and mail (including Neighbourhood Mail and Transaction Mail) will continue to be processed on a first-in, first-out basis.
  • Date-specific Neighbourhood Mail is not currently available. The service will resume once our operations have stabilized. We will notify customers as soon as we are able to resume this service.
  • All return labels created on or after October 15 will remain valid for up to 45 days until our operations stabilize.
  • Service standards for Transaction Mail will be affected in the short term. We will work to move volume as quickly as possible.
  • For international mail and parcels, customers should continue to expect delays into 2025. We will start accepting new international mail and parcels on Monday, December 23.

 On-time service guarantees

  • On-time service guarantees remain suspended as we ramp up operations.
  • Once the network is stabilized, we will notify customers when on-time service guarantees are reinstated.

Our commitment to customers

As we safely ramp up our operations, we recognize the urgency to process and deliver the items already in our network as well as new items that are deposited. We know customers are relying on us to deliver for Canadians. We will continue to keep customers informed on how we are progressing and what it means for their business.
